Vitis vinifera is the species of grape that we think of when we think of classic wine grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc.
Vitis riparia is a native American grape, often called a riverbank grape or frost grape.
Vitis labrusca is another native American grape, often called a fox grape. The most famous variety is Concord. Welch’s grape juice, anyone?
Vitis vinifera x riparia is one of the many hybrid crosses. We get Marquette, Frontenac, Itasca, and dozens of other varieties from these inter-specific hybrids.
